A seven-goal second period was the difference as the Northern Hawks cruised to their ninth straight victory dumping the Screaming Eagles 10-2 Thursday in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League play at Delaney Arena.

The league’s leading point producer in Ryan Powell would open the scoring just 17 seconds into the contest with the only marker of the opening period.

Sean Cunninghame would make it 2-0 with a shorthanded effort 6:21 into the second stanza before the Eagles’ Justin Peters struck on the power play to cut the deficit in half.

The Hawks would however blow it open from there scoring six times in less than a six-minute span to make it an 8-1 game after 40 minutes.

Two of those goals would come off the stick of Cunninghame who completed his hat-trick while single tallies went to Josh Elvish, Geoff Vaillant, Jordan Andrusyk and Nathan Spina.

Kyle Gardner would notch the Eagles second goal, via the power play, in the third before Spina’s second and one by Cole Sheehan concluded the evening’s scoring.

Shots on goal favoured the Hawks by a 43-14 count as they improved to 9-0-1 on the year while the Eagles fell to 0-8-2.

Markus Leikkari would pick-up the victory in net and Curtis Barker suffered the loss.

League action resumes Friday when the Nipigon Elks host the Thunder Bay Jr. B Stars at the Nipigon Community Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
