Dustin Helwig is Lakehead’s lone hope for gold at the CIS national wrestling championships.

But he’ll have to beat a long-time rival to take home the title.

The 23-year-old Helwig will face off Saturday against Western’s Steven Takahashi, the two-time defending champion in the 54-kilogram category who stopped Helwig in last year’s gold-medal match, not to mention the more recent OUA final.

Helwig won bronze in 2011.

The Thunderwolves only other medal hope, of eight wrestlers who qualified for the London, Ont. event, is Chadd Lee in the 90-kiolgram category.

Lee takes on Western’s Kevin Ens in the bronze-medal bout.

Teammate Scott Christian will fight for fifth in the 72-kilogram division.

None of LU’s five women made it to a medal match.

Emma Horner, Laurel Knowles, Sara Cattani and Kelsey Dayler will all battle for fifth-place finishes, while Jenny Pranger is in the seventh-place match in the 63-kilogram category.
