THUNDER BAY – Day two play in the Thunder Bay Junior B Hockey League’s Joe Ward Memorial preseason wrapped up Friday with four high scoring victories.
The following is a recap of each of those games:
THUNDER BAY JR. B STARS 8 NORTHERN RENEGADES 1—Day two began with Noah Cain firing five goals to lead the Stars past the Renegades, who fell in their first-ever contest.
Cain notched a natural hat-trick before the game was 15 minutes old to send the Stars on their way and added other his markers in the second and third periods.
Dezi Legallais, Patrick Mielke and Pat Eisenbach supplied the other tallies in the victory while Corbin Gervais had the lone Renegades effort, early in the final frame.
Tyler Randke made 26 stops to register the win for the Stars who fired 51 shots on Renegades netminder Justin Olsther.
NORTHERN HAWKS 15 SCHREIBER FALCONS 0—Game two of the day was no contest as the Hawks humbled the Falcons.
Brett Biasiol had a hat-trick for the Hawks, Mitchell Fox added a pair while Sean Cunninghame, Mike Mapledoram, Kyle MacLeod, Justin Veltri, Nick Brimmer, Geoff Vaillant, Nathan Spina, Will Moore and Kyle Gunsinger recorded the other goals for the Hawks who improved to 2-0 in the tourney.
Nick Earnshaw made 18 saves to register the shutout.
Devon Pento and Chase Hamilton both saw time in net for the Falcons facing a total of 46 shots.
NIPIGON ELKS 10 NORTHERN RENEGADES 1—Nipigon joined the Northern Hawks at 2-0 in the tournament with a convincing win over the first-year Renegades.
The Elks would grab a 3-1 lead after one period of play courtesy of two tallies from Brandon Polhill and another by Landon Clearwater.
Jordan Swanson had the lone Renegades’ effort as he had a power play goal at 13:32 of the stanza.
Nipigon would put the game away in the middle frame as they notched six unanswered goals.
Those efforts came off the sticks of Steven St. Jean, Cole Saunders, Jessie Assunmaa, Wayne Routhier, Brodie Biasiol and Bryson Koistinen.
Assunmaa’s second of the evening rounded out the scoring in the third.
THUNDER BAY JR. B STARS 10 SCHREIBER FALCONS 4—The final contest of the day saw the Stars improve to 2-1 in the event with the triumph over Schreiber.
Pat Eisenbach had a three-goal game to pace the Stars offensively while Patrick Mielke and Kyle Lauro both chipped in with a pair. Also adding to the Stars’ goal count were Darren Gresh, Travis Muller and Lino Dixon.
Leading the way for the Falcons was Kevin St. Charles who picked up two markers. Mike Fummerton and Kevin Campbell were the other Schreiber marksmen.
Four more games will be played Saturday to wrap-up the round robin portion of the tourney.
The semifinal contest goes Sunday morning while the championship game gets underway at 3 p.m. at the Tournament Centre.
