Diabetes is a serious disease affecting more than 415 million people worldwide.

In Canada, 11 million people live with diabetes or prediabetes—with another person diagnosed every three minutes. The personal health burden is significant—diabetes costs individuals five to 15 years of life expectancy; it contributes to 30 per cent of strokes, 40 per cent of heart attacks, and 70 per cent of all non-traumatic amputations as well as being a leading cause of blindness.

Community events will take place throughout Canada to recognize people affected by diabetes.

Right here in Thunder Bay, the Superior North EMS along with the Thunder Bay Police Association with support from the Lions Club of Thunder Bay held a hockey game on Wednesday Nov. 2, 2016.

Eighty fans took to the stands to support the players and enjoy a fast-paced game that surprisingly saw no penalties or injuries.

This event was a joint effort in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA). Although there is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes, early detection and treatment can help people change habits to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of developing diabetes-related complications.
