It looks like it’s going to be a youthful defensive corps manning the Lakehead Thunderwolves blue-line this fall.
On Friday the team announced the commitment of its fourth freshman rearguard, in the form of former Quebec Major Junior Hockey Leaguer Danick Malouin.
The Granby, Que., native split last season between the Baie Comeau Drakkar, his third QMJHL squad, and the B.C. Hockey League’s Nanaimo Clippers.
A 6-foot-4 and 198 pounds, he’ll bring plenty of size, though likely little offence, as a stay-at-home defender.
In five major junior seasons, Malouin racked up 10 goals and 43 assists in 237 games.
“Danick is a big, tough defenceman who brings great Major Junior experience to our line-up. He has a reputation as a hard worker and will be a great addition to our locker room,” LU coach Joel Scherban said in a release issued by the team.
Earlier this week the Wolves revealed Mitch Fillman, an Ontario Hockey League grad with much the same pedigree had committed to play defence for the club. He’ll join fellow freshmen blueliners Luke Maw and Riley McIntosh, a 6-foot-5 behemoth known more for his hits than his hands.
Also expected in camp are forwards Jake Carrick and Jason Grecica, who spent the past two years in the BCHL, and goalie Jeff Bosch.
