It’ll be a tough start for the Lakehead Thunderwolves when the OUA hockey regular season gets under way on Oct. 7.
The Wolves open the 2011-12 campaign at home against the McGill Redmen, a team that made easy work of its OUA opponents en route to a second-place finish at the University Cup in Fredericton, N.B. in March.
LU officials on Wednesday released the team’s official schedule for the upcoming season. In addition to the Redmen, the Wolves will play host to Ontario Tech, Guelph, Laurier, Waterloo, Western and Brock during regular season play.
Other highlights include non-conference visits by the always powerful UQTR Patriotes on Sept. 23 and 24 to open the season.
The team will then hit the road south of the border for games against Michigan Tech and the defending NCAA champion Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on Oct. 1 and 2.
They'll also play a pair of non-conference tilts against the Calgary Dinos on Dec. 2 and 3, and in a switch from the past two seasons, the Carleton Ravens will provide the opposition in the RBC Christmas Challenge starting Dec. 29.
Regular season road opponents will include Ottawa, York, Laurier, Windsor, Ontario Tech, Brock and Western, marking the return of home-and-away series between the two rivals. The Mustangs and Wolves only met twice, both in London, last season.
