The Northwoods League all-star break couldn’t have come soon enough for the Thunder Bay Border Cats.
Armed with just a single win heading into Sunday’s finale of an eight-game road trip, the Cats were thrashed handily by the Duluth Huskies, who pounded out 16 hits and walked 13 times on the way to a 16-7 triumph.
Keith Curcio had the heavy bat for the Huskies, going 4-for-4 with a double and five RBI. Kyle Teaf scored four times, while Brad Wilson drove in three.
Thunder Bay’s pitchers were hit hard in the early going. Starter Cam Wood (L, 2-1) was chased after two, having given up five runs on four hits and five walks.
Reliever Daniel Stoney was even less effective, charged with six runs in two-thirds of an inning, while Steve Pastrana gave up five more in one-and-a-third.
Dylan Becker and Tyler Duplantis each scored twice for Thunder Bay, who got six of their nine hits against Duluth starter Parker Trewin (W, 2-2), who lasted five innings, long enough to pick up the win.
The Cats (4-14) and Huskies (11-7) will do it all over again on Thursday, when the Cats return to the friendly confines of Subway Field.
