A month ago Carter Hutton was wrapping up a four-year career with the UMass-Lowell hockey team.
Today he’s in the NHL.
Hutton, who signed an amateur tryout deal last week with the American Hockey League’s Adirondack Phantoms, on Saturday learned he’s going to spend the rest of the regular season with their parent club, the Philadelphia Flyers.
Hutton was recalled on an emergency basis.
“I’m a little nervous and a little excited,” Hutton said in a release issued by the Flyers. “It’s all mixed together. It has been a bit of a whirlwind the past couple of days. I’m excited to be here and given the opportunity to put on the Flyers jersey and be a part of this organization.”
A former goaltender with the Fort William North Stars, the Thunder Bay native becomes the first former Superior International Junior Hockey League player to make it to the NHL.
Hutton has a 1-2-1 record since joining the Phantoms, with a 2.71 goals against average and a .921 save percentage.
He spent four years in the NCAA, was a long-list finalist for the Hobey Baker Trophy and this year led all Hockey East goalies with a 2.04 goals against average, .928 save percentage and four shutouts. He was also named to the Hockey East second all-star team.
He is UMass-Lowell’s all-time leader in goals against average, at 2.33, shutouts (10) and is tied atop the save percentage charts at .913.
