Steals in the fifth, sixth and seventh ends powered Thunder Bay’s Cody Johnston to his first win Sunday at the Canadian junior men’s curling championship in Calgary.

Johnston, who lost both opening-day matches, was knotted at four with Manitoba’s Sam Good after four ends, then took control with singles in the next three ends to go up 7-4.

However, Johnston (1-3) could not keep the good play going in the evening draw, falling 7-5 to Jonathan Gardner's British Columbia rink. Gardner put up three in the first end and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire.
