Kamview Jackrabbit Sprints

More than 140 children participated in a spectacular day of cross-country skiing.

THUNDER BAY -- The Kamview Jackrabbit Sprints took place on Feb. 24 at Kamview Nordic Centre.  The organizers believe this was the 19th annual Kamview Jackrabbit Sprints so plans are underway to celebrate the 20th year of the Sprints in 2019.  This year it was bigger and better than ever so it will be difficult to top!

This event introduces children to healthy competition in a fun and festive environment. It also allows children the opportunity to demonstrate their skiing skills to parents and spectators. All participants received a delicious participation cookie “medal” and a chocolate bar as they crossed the finish line.  A shout out to Mia Serratore and Sadie White from the National Team Development Centre Thunder Bay – they joined us for the day and handed out medals, chocolate bars and best technique awards…and kept us entertained with their enthusiastic dancing!

With more than 140 children (4 to 14-years-old) participating, it was a spectacular day.  The cross country ski trails were groomed to perfection and the sun was shining.  At bib pick-up in the Kamview Chalet, each participant received a gift from various sponsors and snacked on oranges and bananas.  After the races in the Kamview Stadium, there was a campfire for roasting marshmallows and a volunteer cooking burgers for lunch on the BBQ.

Best Technique awards were presented to the following participants:

Bunnies: Owen Moffatt & Kirsti Puiras
Level 1: Eric Genuk & Chloe Sproule
Level 2: Lucas Gale & Samantha Sdao
Evaluation Group: Matteus Bravinder & Ava Lombardo
Level 3: Sawyer Puumala & Mae Cerisano
Level 4: Noah Wiebe & Min Dobson
Track Attack: Cedric Martel & Kytalyn Smith

There were almost as many Lappe Nordic Ski Club Jackrabbits participating as those from the Kamview Jackrabbit program.  On Saturday, March 3 many of these same Jackrabbits will be heading to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park to ski together at the 41st Annual Sleeping Giant Loppet.  What an amazing family-friendly ski community we have here in Thunder Bay!
