Keffer crushed by Nova Scotia, Roberts drops Newfoundland

Draw 7 started out well for Thunder Bay’s Tirzah Keffer. But by the third end things started going downhill in a hurry against Nova Scotia’s Mary Myketyn-Driscoll.

Draw 7 started out well for Thunder Bay’s Tirzah Keffer.

But by the third end things started going downhill in a hurry against Nova Scotia’s Mary Myketyn-Driscoll.

Kirzah scored once in the first, but gave up three in the third and struggled the rest of the way. Myketyn-Driscoll stole two in the fourth, three in the fifth and singles in the sixth, seventh and eighth, cruising Monday to an 11-1 win at the Canadian Junior Women’s Curling Championship in Fort McMurray, Alta.

Team Northern Ontario, which beat Prince Edward Island earlier in the day, slipped to 2-3, with one game to play in the round robin. Nova Scotia evened its record at 2-2 in Pool B.

The top four teams in each pool advance to the championship round. The bottom three teams are relegated to the seeding round, trying earn berths at the mixed junior championship and next year's Canadian juniors.

Things got better for the Northern Ontario junior men’s team in Draw 7.

The Matthew Roberts foursome rebounded from an earlier 13-5 loss to New Brunswick to dump Newfoundland and Labrador 9-3 Monday night.

Roberts took a 5-1 lead through four and stole three more in the fifth to seal the win and raise their record to 2-3.

In men’s play Northern Ontario takes on Quebec (2-2) on Tuesday evening, when a win would clinch at least a spot in a tiebreaker.

The same two sides tangle in the afternoon draw on the women’s side.

The Quebec men play Nova Scotia in the afternoon.
