KENORA, Ont. -- The Allan Cup is heading to Northwestern Ontario in 2017.

Hockey Canada on Thursday announced the men’s national senior hockey championship will be hosted by the Kenora Thistles.

“The Kenora Thistles are privileged to have been awarded the opportunity to host such a prestigious event like the Allan Cup. It's with great pride that we have the chance to showcase the skills, talent and character of the top senior AAA teams in Canada,” Kenora general manager Bryan Booth said in a news release.

The Thunder Bay Bombers were the last team from Northwestern Ontario to win the championship, taking the title in 2005.

The Thistles have taken part in four Allan Cups since 2007, most recently in 2011.
