ASTON, Penn. – It was a good day for the Thunder Bay Kings Saturday as their three teams that are away in competition won four of the five contests they played.
In North American Prospects Hockey League action in Aston, Penn., the minor midget Kings won their lone game of the day, a 1-0 shootout triumph over the Everett Jr. Silvertips, while the major midget squad suffered a 6-2 setback to the first place Madison Capitols before bouncing back to edge the Arizona Bobcats 3-2 in a shootout.
Meanwhile down in Duluth, the Thunder Bay peewee Kings improved to 3-0 at the Gales of November tournament.
The peewees picked up two more victories in Duluth Saturday blanking the St. Paul Capitals 4-0 before edging the Hermantown Hawks 5-4 later in the day.
In Pennsylvania, Seth McKay went the distance for Thunder Bay’s under-16 side in posting the shutout finishing regulation with 24 saves.
In the shootout McKay turned aside three of four attempts to secure the win.
Scoring for the Kings in extra shots was Jett Leishman and Robert Tyska.
The minor midgets return to the ice Sunday for a pair of tilts as they meet the Philadelphia’s Little Flyers U-16s at 8:15 a.m. before they wrap-up the day against the Madison U-16s in an 8:45 p.m. start.
Against the major midgets Kevin Ford tallied twice and set-up two others to pace the Capitols to victory.
Jacob Brown in the first period and Kirk Coppock, with a late power play marker, scored for the Kings.
Logan Mihalcin assisted on both goals while Tyler Szturm was peppered with 43 shots in defeat in a game that saw Thunder Bay have 15 attempts on net.
Bouncing back, the U-18 Kings saw Brown convert for the only marker in the shootout win over Arizona.
Coppock had a goal and an assist in the victory setting up Mihalcin for the tying tally 7:31 into the third.
Ryan Fanti stopped 33 of 35 in regulation plus all five attempts in extra shots to earn the win.
The major midgets are back at it Sunday as they take on Philadelphia at 2:20 p.m.
As for the peewees, in the match-up vs. St. Paul, Brayden McKever kicked out all 16 shots he faced to register the shutout.
Alex Atwill scored twice in the win while Jack Pineau and Jeremy Dunmore supplied singles.
Taking on Hermantown the Kings pulled out the decision in the back and forth affair thanks to Tyler Lewis’ game-winner with eight minutes to go.
Nolan Desjardins and Jett Mintenko staked Thunder Bay to a 2-0 lead after one.
Each side would tally twice in the middle stanza with Hunter Matyasovszky and Desjardins scoring for the Kings.
In the third after Hermantown rallied to tie the contest, but Lewis notched the difference maker just 38 seconds after the equalizer.
Gage Stewart faced 24 shots in picking up the win in net.
Thunder Bay wraps up round robin play Sunday at 9 a.m. vs. the White Bear Lake Bears with either a place in the championship or consolation final game on tap in the afternoon.
