Lakehead falls in four sets to Guelph

THUNDER BAY -- The fourth time was not the charm for the Lakehead Thunderwolves volleyball team as they continue to search for their first win of the regular season.

THUNDER BAY -- The fourth time was not the charm for the Lakehead Thunderwolves volleyball team as they continue to search for their first win of the regular season.

Lakehead dropped a four-set match (15-25, 17-25, 25-18, 23-25) to the Guelph Gryphons at the Thunderdome on Saturday afternoon.

The first two sets were characterized by sloppy and erratic play before the Thunderwolves showed signs of life in the fourth.

Trailing 14-17, fifth-year senior Jasmine Fox served the way to a 9-0 run, leading Lakehead to the brink of getting back within one.

The Thunderwolves appeared poised to push for a fifth set as they led 23-19 in the fourth but they dropped the next six points to lose the match.

Stalwart hitter Jennifer Casey was benched early in the third set after an uneven performance. She was replaced by Sara Potter who proceeded to convert 13 kills on 27 attempts. Kailin Robinson also had 13 kills in the losing effort.

Guelph was led by Madison Dedecker, who finished the match with 10 kills.

The two teams will square off again on Sunday with the contest scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
