Runner Kevin Tree captured bronze at the OUA cross country championship.

It’s the first medal of any kind for Lakehead University since 2000.

Overall the Thunderwolves men grabbed fifth spot at the Waterloo, Ont. event, with the women’s team finishing ninth.

"Overall a good day for Lakehead Cross Country Running - the girls were ninth which is a nice improvement over last year and about where I was hoping they would be," said akehead coach Kip Sigsworth in a release.

"The men battled hard in a very competitive field. I was hoping we would be able to catch Queen's and finish fourth , but they were just a bit better than us today. Tree ran great today and proved once again he's capable of running with the best guys in the country."

The men’s team finished with 127 points, just 10 behind Queen’s in fourth.

The women collected 242 points, 58 behind Windsor in eighth.

Tree will take to the national stage in two weeks at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship.
