NEWARK, N.J. – Eric Staal became just the second NHL player from Thunder Bay to hit the 900-point mark.

Staal scored a third-period goal, a backhander into an empty net in the Minnesota Wild’s 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night to reach the milestone, becoming just the 110th player in league history to reach the mark.

Playing in his 1,071st career contest, Staal has 380 goals and 520 assists over his career, which began in 2003 with the Carolina Hurricanes and also saw him spend time with the New York Rangers.

The 33-year-old forward has 27 goals and 27 assists in 60 games with the Wild in 2017-18.

The goal tied him with former Rangers forward Tony Amonte on the NHL’s all-time scoring list.

He’s two behind Pittsburgh star Evgeni Malkin and eight behind hall-of-fame defenceman Scott Stevens.

To date this season Staal has passed hall-of-famers Ted Lindsay, Yvan Cournoyer, Eric Lindros, Bill Barber, Peter Forsberg and Brad Park.

Alex Delvecchio leads all Lakehead-born players with 1,281 points, all accumulated with the Detroit Red Wings.
