A local dentist will brave one of the coldest places on Earth for the next week or so.
Ashkan Makhtari, 43, originally from Iran, but now living in Thunder Bay, is one of 55 competitors taking part in The Last Desert (Antarctica) 2010.

According the 4 Deserts website, Mokhtari is the ultimate RacingThePlanet veteran, having competed in six events, including the Gobi March 2008, the Atacazma Crossing 2009, Racing The Planet: Namibia 2009, the Sahara Race 2009, the Atacama Crossing 2010  and Racing The Planet: Australia 2010.

“He was the only person to complete back-to-back events in 2009 in Chile and Namibia, events that were held only one month apart,” his biography on the official website reads.
Makhtari is raising money for United Way and Dilico.

The event is part of the 4 Deserts series, named by Time magazine as the No. 1 footrace in the world. It’s only open to competitors who have successfully completed at least two of the other 4 Desert races, which include the Gobi March (China), the Atacama Crossing (Chile) and the Sahara Race (Egypt).

Racers will face temperatures as low as -20 C.
