LU engineers confident they have a faster car this year

After taking home rookie of the year honours at the 2009 university racecar competition, LU's engineering students have their sights set even higher for this year's race at the Michigan International Speedway.

The newest car was unveiled this afternoon. While there's still work to be done, team members insist it is lighter, with a lower centre of gravity and ultimately faster than last year's model.

The team of about 45 students built the car from the ground up. Project Manager Tristan Entem said the group has committed well over 2,000 hours to the project. He added that it is a great feeling to see the racecar finally starting to take shape.

The car will take to the track at the Michigan Speedway in May, competing alongside 119 other teams from around the world.

The students are looking to improve on last year's 43rd overall ranking and hope to finish in the top 25. Anyone wanting to catch a glimpse of the car in action can stop by the LU Fieldhouse parking lot on May 1, at 11 a.m.
