The volleyball season did not start on a winning note Friday for the Lakehead Thunderwolves women.

The Wolves, who stayed in the match early against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, did not have the staying power to capture their 2011-12 debut, falling 3-1.

The two teams split the first two sets, with Toronto capturing the first 25-16 and LU earning the second by a 25-22 score.
The Varsity Blues won the final two, 25-22 and 25-19.

Michelle Cournoyer had 11 points, with eight kills, two stuff blocks and two block assists, while Jorie Daymond and Brittany MacLeod had 10 points each for the Wolves.

"We prepared for Toronto well." Chris mentioned post game, "We expect the nerves to not show up for tomorrows rematch. We really did not execute well, and that was on all of us as a team. Our mistakes tonight were all on us,” said Lakehead coach Chris Green.

LU will try for the road split on Saturday.
