Helwig dropped the gold-medal match Saturday to Western’s Steve Takahashi, who captured a third straight national crown in the 54-kilogram category.

Chadd Lee, Lakehead’s only other medal hopeful, lost to Western’s Kevin Ens in the 90-kilogram bronze medal competition.

LU’s Scott Christian finished sixth in the 72-kilogram weight class, falling to Brock’s Gabriel Turetsky.

Overall the men placed 11th in the 14-team event, won by former Thunderwolves coach Owen Dawkins’ University of Alberta squad.
No Lakehead women were in a medal match on Saturday, though three of five athletes won their fifth-place bouts.

Emma Horner, Laurel Knowles and Kelsey Dayler were all victorious on Day 2 of the London, Ont. event. Jenny Pranger finished seventh in the 63-kilogram category, while Sara Cattani wound up sixth in the 67-kilogram class.

The women’s team finished seventh, with Brock taking the national crown.
