Maciver named assistant GM of NHL's Hawks

Thunder Bay’s Norm Maciver is the new assistant general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Thunder Bay’s Norm Maciver is the new assistant general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks.

The former all-star defenceman earned the promotion Monday and takes over from the departed Marc Bergevin, who last week signed a deal to become Montreal’s new GM.

Hawks vice-president and general manager Stan Bowman said Maciver is ready for the new challenge.

“Norm has proven to be a valuable asset to our hockey operations over the past five years, so we are excited to be able to elevate him to this role,” Bowman said in a release issued by the NHL team.

“He has an excellent handle on the players within our organization, from recent draft picks to veterans, and a great eye for talent evaluating. Promoting within our organization is something we take great pride in and we are very confident in what he will contribute on a daily basis as we strive to hire the best possible candidate at every position.”

MacIver, who  scored 55 goals and 230 assists in a 12-year playing career that took him to New York, Hartford, Edmonton, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg and Phoenix, has spent the past five seasons with the Blackhawks organization, most recently a one-year stint as the team’s director of player personnel.

He also spent three seasons behind the bench as an assistant coach with the Boston Bruins from 2003 to 2006.
Maciver was a 2003 inductee into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.
