The Thunder Bay Queen’s netminder, who turned 17 on Monday, on Tuesday was named to Canada’s under-18 women’s hockey team that will take part in the IIHF World Under-18 Championship starting New Year’s Day in Stockholm.

Makela, who will play NCAA hockey next year at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Penn.,earned her spot at a three-day tryout camp in Toronto over the weekend.

Canada kicks off the tournament next Saturday against Switzerland.
