The Ottawa Gee Gees weren’t about to give up their grip on the No. 1 ranking in the nation.

But the Lakehead Thunderwolves gave them a run for their money.

The Gee Gees, who knocked off Carleton last weekend by two points to claim top spot in the country, pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure an 89-76 win.

Johnny Berhanemeskel led the way for Ottawa, pouring in 26 points, while Caleb Agada added 22 and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Jamar Coke had 21 to lead Lakehead, who got 14 points from Dwayne Harvey and 12 from Alex Robichaud.

The Thunderwolves led 19-18 after one quarter and were up 26-25 midway through the second.

The loss evens LU’s record at 5-5, with coach Manny Furtado returning to Carleton on Saturday to take on the Ravens, a team he was an assistant coach with before taking the Thunderwolves reins last summer.

Lakehead is one game up on Brock for the final playoff berth in The OUA Central.

Ottawa stayed perfect at 10-0 atop the OUA North.
