McCarville rink opens Scotties Tournament of Hearts with a win

Krista McCarville and company were winners in their return to the Ontario Scotties of Hearts. The Thunder Bay foursome earned a 6-3 win over Sylvie Robichaud’s New Brunswick rink on Saturday night in Grand Prairie, Alta.

The Thunder Bay foursome earned a 6-3 win over Sylvie Robichaud’s New Brunswick rink on Saturday night in Grand Prairie, Alta., to the week-long national women’s curling championship.

Team McCarville, which also includes lead Sarah Potts, second Ashley Sippala and third Kendra Lilly, scored two in the third after the two sides blanked the first to ends to take an early 2-0 lead.

The two sides traded points in the fourth and fifth ends, McCarville jumping in front by three in the seventh with a steal of one.

After Robichaud pulled to within a point with a pair in the eighth, the 33-year-old McCarville put the opener away, scoring one in ninth and stealing another in the 10th.

McCarville, who steppped away from the game for two seasons, is making her fifth appearance at the Scotties, her first since 2010.

Team Northern Ontario will take on Nova Scotia and Team Canada, skipped by five-time champion Jennifer Jones, on Sunday.
