GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. — Thunder Bay's Krista McCarville and defending champion Jennifer Jones won Tuesday at the Canadian women's curling championship to stay in the playoff hunt.
McCarville beat Prince Edward Island's Suzanne Birt 10-8 to get to 4-1 in round-robin play at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. McCarville, who gave up four in the opening end, stole four of her own in the sixth when PEI burnt its final stone, facing four in the house.
Jones downed New Brunswick's Sylvie Robichaud 10-6 and was tied at 3-2 with Quebec's Marie-France Larouche.
Larouche scored two in the 10th end to beat Manitoba's Kerri Einarson 6-5.
Alberta's Chelsea Carey was the only undefeated team remaining at 5-0. The Calgary team had the morning draw off.
Ontario's Jenn Hanna stole a point in the 10th to edge B.C.'s Karla Thompson 6-5. Hanna improved to 2-3 and was tied with P.E.I. and Manitoba.
Thompson dropped to 1-4 alongside New Brunswick.
The top four teams at the conclusion of the preliminary round Friday advance to the Page playoff.
Next up for Team Northern Ontario is a shot at Stacie Curtis' Newfoundland and Labrador squad on Tuesday afternoon. Curtis is 1-4 through Draw 8.
