NIPIGON, Ont.  – It was a relatively easy debut for Krista McCarville at the Northern Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The six-time provincial-winning skip on Wednesday downed Hailey Beaudry 9-0, as she looks to return to the national championship for the first time in two years.

McCarville, who lost to Tracy Fleury in last year’s Northern Ontario final, made easy work of Beaudry, with steals in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh before the two sides shook hands.

Her team, which includes lead Sarah Potts, second Jen Gates and third Kendra Lilly, was the only Thunder Bay rink to find the win column in Draw 1.

Mike McCarville, Krista’s husband, fell 4-2 to defending champion Brad Jacobs, who took the lead in the opener of the Northern Ontario men's provincial curling championship with a single in the ninth and stole one in the 10th to seal the win. Both events are being played simultaneously at the Nipigon Arena.

Meanwhile Port Arthur Curling Club skip Jenna Enge dropped a 10-8 decision to Sudbury’s Kira Brunton, who scored three in the ninth for the win.

Thunder Bay’s Dylan Johnston takes on Sudbury’s Jordan Chandler in Wednesday’s evening draw, while Mike McCarville will tangle with former Canadian mixed champion Trevor Bonot, who curls out of the Fort William Curling Club. Jacobs plays Sudbury’s Robbie Gordon, while Sudbury’s Tanner Horgan takes on Copper Cliffs’ Dustin Montpellier.

Next up for Krista McCarville is a match with Brunton on Thursday morning. Enge and Beaudry will play in the other women's match.
