Make it an even dozen in the loss column to start the OUA hockey season for the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
Venturing into London this weekend, the Wolves dropped their third straight in regulation and remained winless through 12 games, dropping a 7-5 decision to the No. 8 Western Mustangs.
Give Lakehead (0-9-1) credit for keeping it close.
The powerful Mustangs galloped to a 5-1 lead late in the second, only to have David Quesnele and Garic Gray respond to pull the Thunderwolves within a pair with two minutes to go in the middle frame. However Western’s Trevor Warnaar restored a three-goal cushion with 29 seconds to play in the period.
Lakehead also got goals from Dylan Butler, Sam Schutt and Austin McDonald, the latter pair also adding assists for two-point nights.
Cole Benson, Shaun Furlon, Spenser Cobbold, Ray Huether, Andrew Goldberg and David Corrente replied for Western (9-2-0).
Devin Green was tagged with the loss for the Thunderwolves, allowing seven goals on 37 shots. Peter Delmas went the distances for the Mustangs.
Lakehead hits the road again next weekend to take on the Windsor Lancers before returning home the following weekend for a pair against the University of Toronto, who at 3-5-2, are seven points up on the Thunderwolves in ninth spot in the OUA West.
