Midget Queens blank Guelph in southern Ontario tourney

Aden Johnson posted the shutout in her first start of the season as the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens blanked the Guelph Jr. Gryphons 1-0 Saturday morning in Day 2 play at the 11th annual Stoney Creek Sabres Showcase in southern Ontario.

The tight-checking affair was scoreless until the final minute of the second period when Emilie Varrin notched the game-winner with 45 seconds remaining in the session.

Madeline Browczuk notched the lone assist on the play setting up the difference maker.

Johnson did the rest keeping Guelph off the score sheet as Thunder Bay improved to 2-0-1 after round robin play in the 64-team tournament.

The Queens will now take on the Aurora Panthers at 1:50 p.m. this afternoon as the playoff round gets underway.
