No locals go through in Staal Foundation Open qualifier

For a second straight year no locals managed to Monday qualify for the Staal Foundation Open. Quebec’s Max Gilbert fired a course-record 11-under 61 to capture top spot in the 18-hole event, staged at Strathcona Golf Course.

The final two spots were decided in a seven-man playoff, which required a three-under 69 to participate in.

Four Canadians – Gilbert, Surrey B.C.’s Andrew Rasmussen, Burlington, Ont.’s John Regan and Brantford, Ont.’s Zack Kempa also qualified.

Michael Sainz of Elmhurst, Ill. shot a seven-under 65 to take second place. Houston’s Michael Whitehead was one of six golfers who shot four-under 68, a list that included Rasmussen, Regan and Kempa, as well as California’s Eric Frazzetta  and Florida’s Eric Atsma.

Kyle Scanlon of Circle Pines, Minn. and Germantown, Tenn.’s Alex Snyder nailed down the final two spots in the playoff.

All 10 will tee it up on Thursday at the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada event at Whitewater Golf. 

Thunder Bay's Jeff Hunter, Robbie Untinen and Walter Keating Jr. will aslo be in the field. Hunter and Untinen won local qualifiers, while Keating Jr., a former Canadian Tour player, was granted an exemption by tournament officials.
