An Ehren Menard goal early in the second period stood up to be the game-winner as the Northern Hawks edged the Jr. B Stars 3-2 Tuesday.

The Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League action took place Tournament Centre. Josh Elvish would put the league-leading Hawks on top in the first minute of the contest as he beat Stars’ starter Tyler Bolen with an unassisted effort at the 37-second mark.

Jordan Miller would level the proceedings for the Stars seven minutes later as he slid his 13th goal of the campaign past Markus Leikkari in the Hawks’ net.

Elvish put his side back on top at 14:54 only to see Dan Carlson notch his first of the season to tie it after 20 minutes.

Menard put away the winner at 1:04 into the second with the final goal of the night as both netminders kept their respective opposition shooters off the score sheet the rest of the way.

Shots on goal favoured the first place Hawks by a 42-33 margin as they improved to 24-3-2 on the year while Stars, who sit in third spot overall, slipped to 8-17-4.

League play continues Thursday when the Hawks tangle with the Screaming Eagles at Delaney Arena. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
