Queens move atop Esso Cup standings

REGINA - The Thunder Bay Queens moved atop the round-robin standings with a 5-2 win over the Moncton Rockets at the Esso Cup women's midget hockey championship Wednesday.

REGINA - The Thunder Bay Queens moved atop the round-robin standings with a 5-2 win over the Moncton Rockets at the Esso Cup women's midget hockey championship Wednesday.

The Queens (3-1-0) have nine points off of three regulation wins, one more than the Notre Dame Hounds (3-0-0, eight points).

The Hounds, who played the host Regina Rebels later Wednesday, have one less point because one of their wins came in overtime. The Esso Cup awards three points for a regulation win and two for an extra-time victory.

In other action, Richelieu beat Edmonton 4-2.

Michela Cava had the opening for Thunder Bay, and assisted on Kaitlyn Tougas's empty-net goal to help close the scoring.

Kaitlyn Quarrell, Brittany Zuback and Kylie Cornell also scored for Thunder Bay.

Katherine Richard and Janik Robichaud replied for Moncton (1-2-1, four points).

Amanda Makela made 19 saves for the Queens, while Pascale Daigle stopped 32 shots for Moncton.

Valerie St-Onge scored the winning goal as Richelieu picked up its first win of the tournament.

Audrey Charland, Allison Chute and Genevieve Bannon also scored for Richelieu (1-3-0, three points).

Kirsten Reeves and Alison Campbell replied for Edmonton (1-2-1, four points).
