Queens off to good starts at Windsor tourney

Both the Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA and Triad Contracting peewee Queens are off to good starts at the fourth annual Hocktoberfest tournament taking place in Windsor recording a win and a tie apiece in opening day action Friday.

The defending Ontario provincial champion bantams began with a 2-0 triumph over the Cambridge Road Runners and followed that up with a 1-1 draw vs. the host Windsor Wildcats.

Karli Nummikoski netted the game-winner at 4:47 of the first period in the contest against Cambridge with Emily Oleksuk and Lily Vescio drawing assists.

Following a scoreless second stanza Lydia Johnson supplied an insurance marker in the final frame to round out the scoring. Danielle Veneruzzo and Allison Pages earned helpers on that tally.

Brooke Basaraba would post the shutout for Thunder Bay in the victory.

In the contest against Windsor, the Wildcats took the lead in the second period only to see Veneruzzo notch the tying goal four minutes later finishing off the work of Whitney Scott and Emily Oleksuk.

Megan Joseph-Seeley was in net for the Queens, who outshot Windsor 38-18.

The bantams return to the ice on Saturday when they meet the Kitchener Lady Rangers at 8:15 a.m., which will be followed with a 2:30 p.m. match-up against the St. Catharines Chaos.

As for the Triad peewees, they opened up with a 4-1 triumph over Windsor before settling for a 1-1 draw against Detroit Little Caesars.

They will return to the ice on Saturday when they take on Honeybaked of Michigan at 11:45 a.m.
