Queens start nationals with easy win

The Thunder Bay Sportop Queens are off to a tremendous start at the Esso Cup Canadian National Female Midget Hockey Championship in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Thunder Bay got five points apiece from Michela Cava and Kaitlyn Tougas to help the club roll over the Capital District Cyclones 12-1 Sunday evening in day 1 action at the CARI Complex.

Cava and Tougas both had two goals and three assists apiece in the romp while Samantha Strassburger fired a hat-trick and set-up another.

Jessica Gazzola also had four points, including a pair of tallies with Drue Ahola, Jillian Langtry and Natasha Nicholl supplying singles.

Gemma McDonald had the lone Capital District marker coming on a second period power play.

Megan Leikkari and Jayde Turcotte combined to face 12 shots in the triumph for Thunder Bay who fired 40 pucks on the Cyclones net.

The Queens return to game action at 5 p.m.ET when they take on the 2011 Esso Cup silver medalist Edmonton Thunder.
