For the first time, women from Northern Ontario will compete amongst themselves for a chance at a berth at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Five regional teams, who until 2015 fought for the spot against the rest of Ontario, will take to the ice starting Jan. 14 at the Fort William Curling Club.

The winner advances to a four-team nationals qualifier next month in Moose Jaw, Sask. Two teams from that qualifer will earn a spot at the national Scotties.

Sudbury skip Tracy Horgan is the pre-tournament favourite. She’ll be joined by three Thunder Bay rinks, led by Kendra Lilly, Jessica Williams and Liane Fossum, and North Bay’s Laura Payne.

Weekend passes for the event are $15, whole full championship passes, that include reserved front-row seats, are $50.

Single-draw passes are $5 and available at the door only.
