A six-goal second period surge gave the Screaming Eagles their first-ever Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League victory Thursday evening as they downed the Nipigon Elks 7-1 at Delaney Arena.

Following a scoreless opening period the Eagles erupted for four goals in the first seven minutes of the middle frame on a pair of tallies from Justin Peters as well as solo markers supplied by Matt Mitchell and Kirk Meekis.

Cole Saunders would then register Nipigon’s lone effort before Ryan Witherspoon and Travis Tom answered back for the Eagles to make it 6-1 after 40 minutes.

Kyle Gardner would then round out the scoring in the third as his side improved to 1-9-2 on the year while the Elks slipped to 6-6-4.

Jesse Wawia-Boucher chipped in a major way offensively for the first-year club, dishing out four assists on the night.

Curtis Barker had a strong game between the pipes for the Eagles making 43 saves as his teammates fired 45 shots on both Nipigon starter Ryan Williams and Thomas Gratz, who provided a 33-minute relief spell.

The next league contest goes Sunday as the Eagles take on the first place Northern Hawks back at Delaney. Game time is 8 p.m.
