Shields 49th in Estonia

Andy Shields was the top Canadian finisher in the 10-kilometre skate on Wednesday at the world junior Nordica championships in Otepaa, Estonia.
Andy Shields was the top Canadian finisher in the 10-kilometre skate on Wednesday at the world junior Nordica championships in Otepaa, Estonia.

Shields, a member of the National Development Team-Thunder Bay, crossed the finish line in 26:20, good for 49th place in a field of 103 skiers. Sindre Skar of Norway won the race in 24:05.2.

Next up for Shields, a native of Kitchener, Ont., is the 1.4-kilometre classic sprint race.

Thunder Bay’s Michael Somppi will hit the trails on Thursday for the under-23 15-kilometre free race, while NDC teammate Erin Tribe, also of Thunder Bay, will compete in the women’s under -23 10-kilometre event.
