SIJHL: Matechuk erupts for four goals, Miners edge North Stars on road

Special teams gave English River the early lead in this one as Trevor Pereverzoff struck shorthanded two minutes into the contest.

Avery Siau levelled the proceedings for Thunder Bay at 6:36 with his seventh goal of the season only to see Matechuk tack on his first two tallies of the night four minutes apart to put the visitors up by a pair.

Aaron Balcombe brought the North Stars closer at 18:38 of the opening frame.

The home side tied it again 13:55 into the middle session on Landon Letwin’s first SIJHL goal.

However the Miners notched a pair of late power play markers before the second was complete as Matechuk and Ryker Moreay scored 49 seconds apart to put the visitors in front for good.

Nicholas Nigro moved the North Stars to within one midway through the third, but Matechuk capped off his big night with an insurance marker into an empty net at 19:16 to secure the English River win.

Moreau and Pereverzoff both added two assists as well to aid the Miners cause.

Brad Arabia had a couple of helpers for the Stars.

Korlan Vader made 32 saves to record the decision for the Miners.

Eric Mann started for Thunder Bay and allowed three against on 13 shots in 20 minutes of work.

Riley Corbin played the final two periods in relief and suffered the loss saving 30 of 32 overall.
