Thunder Bay’s Michael Somppi didn’t win gold on Monday, but silver is a pretty good consolation prize.

Competing in the first of four races at the Canada Winter Game in Halifax, Somppi missed gold by just two seconds in the 10-kilometre freestyle race.

National Development Centre-Thunder Bay teammate Chris Hamilton finished sixth in the event, which NDC member Andy Shields was 12th and Jimmy Gunka was 14th.

In the woman’s race Erin Tribe crossed the line in seventh while B.C. native Andrea Lee finished 21st. Both skiers train with NDC-Thunder Bay.

Racing continues on Tuesday with the 1,000-metre sprints.
