The Staal Foundation Open is getting a little more interactive in its third year.
Tournament officials on Friday announced they’ll be bringing in a host of extra-curricular activities to entice younger fans to Whitewater Golf Club in July to take part in the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada event.
Members of the Thunder Bay Chill, the Boys and Girls Club of Thunder Bay and Snag Golf were on hand for the announcement, held at Janzen’s Pharmacy’s Hodder Avenue location.
“It’s about having people come out and be more active at the event, and it’s honestly reaching out to different demographics and making it more of a family, fun-filled day. There’s going to be some golf happening, but a lot of other activities out there in kids.”
Janzen’s owner and pharmacist Brenda Adams said anything that encourages children to get out and be more active is OK in her books.
The Interactive Zone does just that.
“It’s always been a great spectator event, and even though there are some (other) things to do, we just thought it was great to add another component to our sponsorship in the tournament and make an area that people will be able to physically participate in,” Adams said.
Tournament officials also said they’ll be launching their call for up to 500 volunteers starting on Tuesday.
The Staal Foundation Open runs from July 11-17.
