Staal nets two in Pens win

On Saturday night Don Cherry was touting Jordan Staal as a possible addition to the Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team. On Tuesday night  he showed why.

Staal scored a pair of goals, his 12th and 13th of the season, to lead the host Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-2 win over the Atlanta Thrashers.

The Thunder Bay native also added an assist, raising his point total to 29.

Kris Letang, Ruslan Fedotenko and Luca Caputi also scored for the Penguins. Jim Slater had both Atlanta goals.

At Chicago, Patrick Sharp had an assist and Marian Hossa scored twice, leading the Blackhawks to a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild.

At Calgary Oli Jokinen scored the winner with 18 seconds to go in the second as the the Flames went on to beat the Nashville Predators 3-1.

At East Lansing, N.J., Martin Brodeur earned the 106th shutout of his career, out-duelling Thunder Bay’s Alex Auld in the Stars 4-0 win. Auld made 23 stops on 27 shots.

Elsewhere Washington doubled Montreal 4-2, Toronto edged Florida 3-2 and Boston rolled over Ottawa 4-1.
