A wrap-up of game action in the Thunder Bay Junior B Hockey League over the weekend saw the Jr. B Stars and Northern Hawks post victories.
The Stars swept the visiting Schreiber Falcons in a two-game set at the Tournament Centre winning by scores of 8-4 Saturday and 4-2 Sunday.
Meanwhile the Hawks disposed of the Northern Hawks 5-1 on Saturday while a second contest that was scheduled for Sunday was postponed.
In the opener between the Stars and Falcons, Chris Bourdous and Terrance Cheechoo both tallied twice to pace the home side to the win while Lino Dixon, Dan Biscardi, Kyle Lauro and Tyler Paul supplied singles.
Scoring for Schreiber were Tyler Megan, Dylan Duranceau, Tyson Nadon and A.J. Lane.
Tyler Randle made 34 saves to pick-up the win.
Chase Hamilton started for the Falcons, but gave way to affiliate netminder Evan Speziale in the second period.
The duo combined to face 40 shots on the night.
Sunday’s finale saw an even closer contest that was not decided until the late stages.
Jean-Luc Moses’ sixth of the season put the visitors up early only to see Biscardi and Dixon strike before the opening frame was complete.
Dixon’s second of the game early in the middle stanza put the Stars up 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Dustin Taylor’s 10th of the campaign with 1:04 remaining in regulation made it a one-goal game, but Cheechoo would ice it with 14 seconds remaining scoring into the empty net.
Shots on goal favoured the Stars 29-25 with Joey Wanzuk registering the victory while Hamilton was saddled with the loss.
Meanwhile at Eagle Lake Arena Saturday the league-leading Hawks jumped out to a big lead and shut the door the rest of the way in the triumph over the Renegades.
Josh Elvish, Nathan Spina, Brett Biasiol and Will Moore all found the back of the net on Renegades starter Curtis Barker in the first period to go up 4-0.
The second session saw Franklin Keeper and Moore trade tallies to round out the scoring.
Markus Leikkari only had to make 15 saves to pick-up his 13th win of the campaign.
Barker was pelted with 50 shots in a losing cause as the Renegades remained winless at 0-16-1.
Next up on the Jr. B docket sees the Northern Hawks (21-1) hosting the Nipigon Elks (16-5) Tuesday evening at the Tournament Centre in a battle of the top two clubs in the standings. Game time is 8 p.m.
