COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sometimes a tie is not such a bad thing after all.

On Friday the Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s hockey team battled back from a 3-1 second-period deficit to earn a 5-5 draw against the Boston College Eagles, enough to propel them into Saturday’s semifinal at the ACHA Division 2 women’s hockey championship in Columbus, Ohio.

Amanda Pages scored twice for Lakehead, who led 1-0 after one, but trailed by two after Erin McLaughlin beat LU goalie Callie Bevilacqua on a penalty shot at 13:37 of the second.

Farrah Nicholl responded two minutes later for the Thunderwolves to cut the lead to one after 40 minutes, and Hannah Armstrong tied it 3-3 with an unassisted tally six minutes into the third.

The Eagles found themselves in front three minutes and 17 second later in the winner-take-all contest, the victor assured a spot in the semifinal, Erin McLaughlin connecting on a pass from teammate Grace Lidgett.

Pages scored her second of the night at 12:11 of the third, Michelle Carlson adding the go-ahead goal at 15:39.

McLaughlin scored to tie the game 5-5 with 30 seconds to play in regulation, but the Wolves advance on the tiebreaker, the two teams finishing with identical 2-0-1 records in pool play.

Notes: LU coach Daniel Calvert was named the ACHL D2 women’s hockey coach of the year on Friday.
