Thunder Bay Queens team updates
THUNDER BAY – With the season now in full swing, it’s a busy time for each of the five Thunder Bay Queens rep hockey teams, which includes plenty of game action this weekend.
The following is an update on each of the clubs:
MIDGET AA: The Sportop midget AA Queens are off to Detroit, Mich., to compete in the Two Nations Prep series against some of the top teams from across Canada and the U.S.
They will open up play Friday with a pair of games starting with an 8 a.m. encounter vs. Team Wisconsin.
Game 2 of the day has them taking on the Chicago Young Americans at 2 p.m.
Two more tilts are on the slate Saturday beginning with a 9:30 a.m. face-off against the Brantford Ice Cats.
They will then meet Honeybaked of Michigan at 3:30 p.m. to wrap up round robin play.
Opponents for the Sportop Queens on Sunday will be determined on the results of their first four contests.
MIDGET A: The midget A side has announced the addition of a new major sponsor for the 2015-16 season.
Goldcorp Musselwhite Mine has come on board to serve as the club’s premier sponsor for the remainder of the campaign with the team moving forward being dubbed the Goldcorp midget A Queens.
BANTAM AA: The RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens have just returned home from a hard-fought three-game exhibition series in Chippewa Falls, Wis., against the Team Wisconsin under-14 squad.
Game 1 saw Thunder Bay outshoot Wisconsin 21-17, but they could not solve goaltender Ava Bailey, who posted the shutout in earning a narrow 1-0 victory Friday.
Paige Wilson also had a strong game in the Queens net allowing only a first period marker in defeat.
The two sides then met twice Saturday with Wisconsin needing an empty netter before finally securing a 4-2 triumph before the clubs battled to a 1-1 draw in the finale.
Victoria Darosa notched both goals for Thunder Bay in the middle game while Wilson and Josée Robinson split time in net for the Queens seeing 21 shots fired their way.
In the final meeting of the exhibition set, Molly Kunnas supplied the tying tally in the second period as they rallied to earn a point.
Mackenzie Lehto and Hannah Leung earned assists on the goal.
Robinson also turned in a solid performance for the Queens stopping 25 of 26 attempts she faced.
BANTAM A: The Tim Horton’s bantam A Queens will host the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints junior varsity squad from Kenora in a three-game affair at the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre.
Action gets underway Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. night cap.
They will then conclude play Sunday morning at 10:15 a.m.
PEEWEE: As for the peewee Queens, they are off to the U.S. for a series of games against teams from northern Minnesota.
They’ll begin Friday when they meet the Chaska-Chanhassen Storm in Grand Rapids, Minn., at 8:30 p.m.
Thunder Bay will then take on the Grand Rapids Lightning twice Saturday with puck drop slated for 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Sunday sees the peewees heading to Duluth for a pair of match-ups vs. the Hermantown Hawks under-12 side.
The first contest will get underway at 11 a.m. before finishing off the weekend with a 3 p.m. start against the Hawks.
