July 15, 2015 — Thunder Bay, Ont. The men's basketball program added two more significant players to their line-up for the upcoming season, transfer guards Nick Burke (U of Toronto) and Aaron McGowan (Fraser Valley).

Both hailing from Ontario, this pair of 6'0" guards bring CIS experience and are both eligible to play in September 2015. Burke, originally from Hamilton, has four years remaining, while McGowan, who calls Toronto home, has two years of eligibility left.

"We are very fortunate to be adding two experienced student athletes to our program today. Both will fill immediate needs for our program moving forward," says coach Manny Furtado.

Burke averaged 5 points, 3 assists and 2 steals per game in his rookie season with the U of T Varsity Blues, and also made the OUA All-Rookie team. He will major in math at Lakehead.

"Nick's athleticism and speed in the full court fits our system perfectly," comments Furtado. "Defending the ball is something our team just got better at today with Nick joining us."

For McGowan, he played a supporting guard's role, scoring 5 points a game with 2.5 assists on a Fraser Valley team that went 19-7 in the Canada West '13-14 season, which included an impressive 14-game winning streak.

About McGowan, Furtado says, "Aaron has the ability to stretch defenses with his perimeter shooting and is an excellent passer off the dribble."

McGowan will pursue his studies in the Faculty of Business Administration. ‎"I am excited to be a part of a great program like Lakehead," say Aaron. "The community is very supportive and I feel the program offers me everything I need to be successful both academically and athletically."
