COLUMBUS, Ohio – They weren’t all going to be 17-1 laughers.

No, Day 2 showed Lakehead’s road to a second straight ACHA Division 2 women’s hockey championship will include plenty of bumps, like the University at Buffalo Bulls.

While the Thunderwolves held on to win 6-4, their opponents scored first and held the powerful Wolves offence from exploding like it did in LU’s opener against Montclair State.

But just like their opening-day opponent, Buffalo’s defence did not have an answer for Lakehead’s Azia Vass, who scored twice and added an assist and upped her tournament-leading total to 10 points in two games.

Alexandra Sawyer, Kalie Verheyen, Michelle Carlson and Jacqueline Desimone also scored for the Thunderwolves, who improved to 2-0.

Madeline Norton paced the Bulls attack, scoring a hat trick and adding a helper on Mamie Talty’s third-period goal that wrapped up the scoring with 7:45 to go in regulation.

Megan Joseph Seeley made 16 saves to pick up the win in nets, while FInley VanHouten was victimized six times on 54 shots between the pipes for Buffalo.

Lakehead plays Boston College (2-0) on Friday. They beat Montclair State 11-1 on Thursday and edged Liberty University 4-3 on Wednesday.
