The Lakehead Thunderwolves men's hockey team has landed a high-profile recruit to join their blue-line corps.
Thunder Bay's Justin Sefton, a former third-round pick of the San Jose Sharks, plans to join the OUA team in January. The 21-year-old played one game this season with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers.
Sefton spent parts of four seasons with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves before being traded to the London Knights in 2012-13.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound rearguard joined the Saginaw Spirit for his final junior season last year, scoring 16 goals and adding 21 assists in 68 games.
“I grew up watching the Thunderwolves, and now it will be nice to be able to play in front of my family and friends as one of them,” Sefton said in a release.
“I’ve got a comfort level with the coaching staff here and combined with Lakehead’s reputation for athletics and academics, it was an easy decision to come here.”
LU coach Bill McDonald, who expressed interest this summer in Sefton, was pleased with his latest recruit’s decision.
“Justin will be a great addition to our defensive unit, as he has great size and has logged a lot of minutes in the OHL,” McDonald said in the release. “He’s made the decision to pursue a university education which is great. I’m eager to see him in the line-up after Christmas and in the coming years.”
