The Sault Ste. Marie-to-Thunder Bay hockey pipeline has come through again for the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

On Thursday the university team announced that 5-foot-8 defenceman Mike Quesnele has committed to play at the school starting in September.

A five-year Ontario Hockey League veteran who spent his entire junior career with his hometown Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Quesnele had career highs with 13 goals and 54 points in 2009-10, fourth on the team in scoring.

Quesnele also played 14 games professionally with Cincinnati of the ECHL, scoring a goal during the postseason.

LU coach Joel Scherban, in a release issued by the team, said Quesnele should easily make himself at home on the Thunderwolves blue-line.

"Mike is a skilled defenceman as evidenced by his production over his major junior career. He plays with a great deal of grit as he averaged 100 penalty minutes over the last 3 seasons, and is a welcome addition to the Thunderwolves."

Quesnele said he liked what he saw when he visited the city in April, making his decision an easy one.

"I loved the pro-like feel of the program, and playing in front of over 3,000 fans and flying to road games really appealed to me," Quesnele said.

"Making nationals four of the last nine years showed that Lakehead is a high-end hockey program and was a key in my decision to play here. The fact that I have some friends attending Lakehead is a big plus as well. I’m excited to join the team and hope to play a big part in leading it to further success."

Defenceman Jordan Smith and forwards Matt Dias and Matt Caria round out the Thunder Bay contingent on the squad.
