Thunderwolves title defence opens with 17-1 win

Azia Vass leads way for Lakehead with seven-point performance.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Azia Vass scored twice and added five assists to lead the Lakehead Thunderwolves to a 16-goal win to open the ACHA Division 2 women’s hockey championship.

The defending champion Wolves also got a two-goal, six-point performance from Jacqueline Desimone and hat tricks from Amanda Pages and Farrah Nicholl in the 17-1 triumph over Montclair State.

Michelle Carlson had two for LU, with singles going to Alexandra Sawyer, Mary Flaherty, Melissa Wilcox and Hannah Armstrong.

Callie Bevilacqua made 17 saves to pick up the victory in nets.

Next up for Lakehead in pool play is the University at Buffalo on Thursday, then a date with Boston College on Friday.
