Krista McCarville probably wishes she had 911 on speed dial.

The Thunder Bay skip watched helplessly on Wednesday as Manitoba’s Jill Thurston stole points from her left, right and centre, sending McCarville and her Fort William Curling Club foursome to their most lopsided defeat yet, 10-5, at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sault Ste. Marie.

Thurston (5-3) stole points in four straight ends to secure the win, handing McCarville (6-2) just her second loss in eight games at the Scotties.

After taking an early 2-0 lead in the opening end, it was all downhill for McCarville, who had her worst day in the hack all week long, curling at about the 50 per cent range, well beneath her usual average.

Thurston responded with one in the second, then stole two in the third, a single in the fourth when McCarville was forced to waste her final stone to avoid a big end. Unfortunately that option didn’t present itself in the fifth, when she came up light on her final shot, rubbed against a Manitoba rock and gave up three.

Another steal of two in the sixth from the aggressive Thurston squad had McCarville asking whether or not it was too early to shake hands.

Scotties rules dictate teams must play seven.

McCarville, tied atop the Scotties standings with Jennifer Jones’s Team Canada rink, made a switch in the seventh end, the seventh, getting fifth Sarah Lang some shots at the lead spot, taking over from Kari MacLean.

They managed to score a pair, and decided to keep going to give Lang a little experience playing in front of a crowd, but it was too little too late, despite making a steal of their own in the eighth.

Also it was reported that McCarville’s third, Tara George, was rear-ended in a car accident and suffered a slight case of whiplash.

In other action Wednesday morning Jones downed Eve Belisle’s Quebec rink 9-4. Belilse falls to 4-4 with the loss. Newfoundland’s Shelley Nichols crushed Alberta’s Valerie Sweeting 11-4. Both rinks are 3-5.
