Two weeks ago the St. Ignatius Falcons caught Jarred White and the Churchill Trojans by surprise and earned a 24-24 tie.
Make no mistake, it wasn’t going to happen again.
White threw four touchdown passes, Devyn Chenier hauled in three of them and Justin Fui took a 98-yard pick-off and a 73-yard punt return into the end zone for two more, as the offensive juggernaut Trojans pounded the St. Ignatius Falcons 56-0 at Fort William Stadium on Friday.
The win follows a 79-0 pasting of the Superior Collegiate Gryphons a week earlier, and was a much better effort than the last time the two sides met, White said.
“We were a lot more prepared this time than we were two weeks ago. I thought we came out and did a great job executing on offence. We got up early on them in the first half and it was a good game for us offensively and defensively,” said White, who was 17-21 through the air for 278 yards, mostly collected in a first-half run that saw the Trojans jump out to a 35-0 halftime lead.
“Last game we executed horribly, especially in the first half, on offence. I wasn’t make good reads, I wasn’t making passes, and it cost us. They made some great plays in the first half.”
It should worry the rest of the Superior Secondary Schools Athletic Association circuit that White, who also ran one in from the goal line, and company think they are only getting stronger as the season moves on.
“Today is the first game that we’ve had everyone on offense in there and it went pretty smooth. I think we’re getting better with every game and hopefully we can get better and building up on these big wins.”
The Trojans, who improved to 4-0-1, took some criticism over the past week after the one-sided win over the Gryphons.
White, who was pulled late in a second half that saw the clock run continuously, said he’s heard the criticism and never was it their intention to embarrass anyone on the football field.
“We’ve still got some things to work on out there. It’s still football. We still love being out there playing no matter what the score is and we’ll keep doing what we’re doing,” he said.
White’s coach, Mike Doromko, said the team purposely changed its offensive game plan against the Falcons once the second half rolled around.
“We tried to do that last week as well, but it was already 62-0 at the half. We made sure they were going to run the clock, and we ran the ball quite a bit. But we throw the ball. We’re a throwing offence and even when we’ve got our second stringers in, all they do all week in practice is catch footballs. We hardly run the football,” Doromko said.
“We did a good job running the football today. I take my hats off to my offensive line. They did one heck of a job today protecting Jarred. And when we rolled out to run the football, we were able to.”
Rory McConnell, who took over for White in the fourth, had an untouched eight-yard run up the middle with three minutes that finished off the scoring for the Trojans, who intercepted St. Ignatius quarterback Robert Paveltic three times and had produced four Falcons turnovers at the half.
St. Ignatius fell to 1-3-1 on the season.

Hammarskjold 10, Westgate 7: Xander Hasell scored on a nine-yard run as the Vikings (4-1-0) clinched a playoff berth with a 10-7 win over the Tigers. Nick Burke caught an eight-yard TD pass from Dylan Stajkowski early in the second for the Tigers only major. Mitchell Hannusch opened the scoring with a 45-yard field goal in the first. Westgate dropped to 1-4-0.
St. Patrick 29, Superior Collegiate 0: Saints quarterback Jordan LeBlanc passed for 98 yards and a touchdown and Jeremy AUbe rushed for 103 yards and a major as St. Patrick (4-1-0) locked down a post-season berth with the shutout win. Superior managed just 64 total yards in falling to 0-5-0.
